The primary characteristic of an engine that the ECU needs to understand is quite simply how many cylinders does it need to run.  The ECU obviously needs to have enough injector and ignition outputs to service the engine it will be connected to.  All MoTeC ECUs have the ability to run engines of less cylinders than they are ultimately capable of, for example the four cylinder ECUs will run 1, 2 or 3 cylinder engines but it is not possible for the four cylinder ECU to run an eight cylinder engine sequentially.

Sequential injection

When each cylinder is serviced individually as if it was its own engine.   A four cylinder, sequential engine will be seen by the ECU as four separate engines.
